Arsenal have begun talks with Inter Milan’s star striker Lautaro Martinez’s agent, according to a reports in Italy.

According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, the Gunners have made contact with Martinez’s agent as they weigh up a transfer bid for the the Argentina international this summer.

Martinez was linked with Arsenal last year as well as local rivals Tottenham after scoring 17 goals he helped Inter to break Juventus’s monopoly atop Serie A and winning the Scudetto last season. However, he ultimately stayed put at San Siro and signed a new long-term contract until 2026.

The 24-year-old is enjoying another fine season having scored 14 goals in 27 league games, while he was also on the scoresheet with a sublime strike during Inter’s Champions League clash at Liverpool. Despite agreeing an extension with Martinez a matter of months ago, the Italian giants are ready to cash in on their player if an offer in the region of €70million (N31.9b) arrives. That is according to CalcioMercato, which also claims Arsenal and Atletico Madrid have emerged as the two standout potential destinations for Martinez.

The report adds Gunners chiefs have spoken to the player’s agent but Atletico are ready to rekindle their interest ahead of the summer window. Although there are no offers on the table for Martinez, Inter have already identified Paulo Dybala, who will leave Juventus for free this summer, as a possible replacement.

The Gunners are expected to make a return for the striker in this summer transfer window as they search for a new front-man after letting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang join Barcelona for free in January. In addition, there is the danger of a further mass exodus to follow.

Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are out of contract come summer, with both expected to leave the Emirates Stadium despite the former’s late resurgence in form, leaving just Folarin Balogun as Arsenal’s only recognised striker option ahead of next season.
