Manchester City fought back against Aston Villa to defend their English Premier League title, Leeds United‘s win against Brentford was enough to keep them up and Spurs clinched fourth to secure UEFA Champions League qualification in a dramatic final day.

The final day of the 2021/22 English Premier League season produced fireworks on Sunday afternoon, with both title rivals falling behind in their crucial matches.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City fought back against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium to defend their English Premier League title, meaning Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Wolves wasn’t enough to keep their quadruple hopes alive.

Burnley knew a win against Newcastle United would ensure their top flight status, but a 2-1 loss to Eddie Howe’s side allowed Leeds United the chance to claim 17th, and a 2-1 win over nine-man Brentford means the Yorkshire side survived.

Leeds became the first side since Wigan in the 2010/11 English Premier League season to head into the final day in the bottom three and survive, as Burnley join Norwich City and Watford in the Championship next season.

Leicester City won 4-1 at home to Southampton on the final day of the EPL to end their campaign on a high note by sealing eighth place.

Having spent a chunk of their season as a mid-table team while they battled away in the Europa Conference League, Leicester finished the season with a four-match unbeaten run. Southampton finished 15th for the second season in a row.

Leeds became the first side since Wigan in the 2010-11 Premier League season to head into the final day in the bottom three and survive, as Burnley join Norwich City and Watford in the Championship next term.

Elsewhere, Tottenham recorded an emphatic 5-0 win over Norwich to clinch fourth from north London rivals Arsenal, who themselves won 5-1 against Frank Lampard’s Everton side.

Tottenham will play next season UEFA Champions League, while Arsenal will play in the UEFA Europa league.

Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United will also play Europa League football next season despite the Red Devils losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace on Sunday. West Ham‘s 3-1 loss to Brighton was enough to keep Ralf Rangnick’s side in sixth.

Ross Barkley came off the bench to head in a late winner as Chelsea saw off Watford on the final day of the EPL season and sent Roy Hodgson into retirement on the back of another defeat.

Chelsea did not finish the season without a trophy, however, having picked up the European Super Cup last August and the Club World Cup in February.
