Manchester United have allowed Harry Maguire some extra time off so the defender can enjoy his honeymoon.
The 29-year-old tied the knot with childhood sweetheart Fern Hawkins in a stunning ceremony in the grounds of an idyllic countryside chateaux in the south of France on Saturday, and the couple are planning to spend the next week on Italy’s gorgeous Amalfi coast.
Maguire posted a photo of the big day on his Instagram, along with the caption: “A day I’ll never forget.”
United’s players are due to start pre-season training on Monday, but it’s understood new manager Erik ten Hag was happy to grant Maguire an extra week’s holiday to mark the special occasion – despite the fact that the Dutchman said he wanted the squad back nice and early in order to prepare for the season ahead.
While the down time might do him some good, Maguire could really do with getting into Ten Hag’s good books as quickly as possible, especially with 52-year-old on the hunt for a new centre back.
Ajax defender Jurrien Timber has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford while Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt could also make the switch after falling out with his club during recent contract negotiations.
Maguire had a disastrous season at the back for United, struggling not only to form an effective partnership with Raphael Varane, but also for his captaincy duties amid reports of a Cristiano Ronaldo-led mid-season mutiny.
